The increasingly frequent use of polyethylene pipes in large or medium-large dimensions has made necessary to provide information regarding this joining procedure although the method to perform mechanical connections between parts of system by means of flanges and bolts is in use for many decades. Carrying a joint flange out may seem simple , but in reality , the method should be inspected and designed in all its details to be able to ensure the effectiveness , in terms of resistance and estate , throughout the lifetime of the system.

The Technical Report is not exhaustive and aims to provide some points of deepening, especially for critical applications, to those who are charged with the system design, taking into account all the technical aspects of the products that will be used and it’s pointed out that the responsibility for the correct application as established in the planning stage relapses both on those who work directly on the junction and those who are charged with supervise the quality of execution.

The Technical Report is a guideline for the determination of the bolts pretensioning (tightening torque) and for the preparation of the procedure (special process) of their tightening for the purpose of mechanical joining of the polyethylene pipes by means of flange and it can be used in the design of the polyethylene systems destinated to the transport of fluids, liquid and gaseous fuels (under pressure), in which installing the mechanical joints made by means of the system adapter flange and loose flange or similar. In the specific parts, for example the procedure and the tightening method, etc. It is usable even by those who run the junctions in the field.

The Technical Report also highlights information that should always be part of the technical documentation for assembly procedures and accompanying flanges adapters, loose flanges, gaskets and other equipment. The Technical Report is also usable for non-pressure lines and the information contained in it can be helpful for the realization of flanged joints carried out with pipes of other thermoplastic materials.
